The brief
teamLab Borderless Jeddah is a museum without maps, and the people who visit it come in every shape: single visitors, fast-track guests, school trips and corporate groups.
The ticketing had to be simple enough to finish on a phone in a minute, and connected enough to open the gates on the day.
Built with
UX lead & PM I led UX and ran the build for a ticketing platform that opens real gates at a real museum.
What I did
- Gathered requirements with the museum and its operators, from ticket types to gate hardware.
- Designed a three-step booking flow that works on a phone in under a minute.
- Specified the gate controller and SMS gateway integrations with our developers.
- Planned and ran unit, integration, load and acceptance testing before launch.
- Managed the launch and the handover to the operations team.
The impact
- 3steps from ticket type to confirmation
- 4ticket types: single, fast track, group and school
- < 60saverage time to book on a phone
- 99.9%uptime through the opening months
The call I made
Design for the phone in the queue
Many visitors buy on the spot, standing outside. We designed the flow for one thumb and a weak connection first, then scaled it up for desktop, not the other way round.
What shipped
- A three-step booking flow, from ticket type to confirmation
- Single pass, fast track, and group, school and corporate tickets
- QR codes on every booking, scanned at the gates
- APIs for the gate controllers and the SMS gateway
- Reporting and analytics for the museum team
- Unit, integration, load and user acceptance testing before launch
